Mouthguards Make Sense

As spring sports begin in Bergen County, the Department of Health Services emphasizes the importance of wearing mouthguards in reducing injuries.

Each year sports-related injuries account for millions of dental injuries. The American Dental Association (ADA) estimates that more than 200,000 injuries are prevented each year in high school and college athletes who use mouth and/or face guards.

A mouthguard cannot wholly prevent injury, but it can minimize the extent of serious injury. Mouthguards help prevent injury to the mouth, teeth, lips, cheek and tongue, and cushion blows that might otherwise result in jaw fractures and/or concussion.

If a tooth is knocked out, quick action should be taken for successful replantation. The ADA evaluated the Save-A-Tooth system and awarded it the ADA Seal of Acceptance. Up to 90 percent of knocked-out teeth can be replanted with Save-A-Tooth.

For further information on purchasing the system, call
Save-A-Tooth at (888) 788-6684 or visit their web site at http://www.save-a-tooth.com/.
