Health Promotion Services Offered
through Interlocal Contracts
Every municipality is required to provide a structured program for health education in accordance with community needs. In 2001, 40 municipalities participated in the department’s Interlocal Contract Program for health promotion activities. Through the contracts, a total of 62,591 health education materials were distributed on seven mandated topics and miscellaneous topics, including:
1,458 on HIV/AIDS
3,875 on alcohol
5,427 on drugs
6,077 on injury control
10,953 on nutrition
9,042 on physical fitness
6,085 on tobacco, and
19,674 on miscellaneous topics.
A total of 450 site visits were made to health departments, libraries, schools and other locations in contracting towns. During a site visit, health educators share information on new public health initiatives and new or revised educational or promotional literature.
Students at Euclid School in Hasbrouck Heights use the Food Guide Pyramid in conducting a health food drive to benefit the needy.
Throughout the year as part of the contracted services, the Office of Health Promotion is prepared to deliver a response in the event of a threat to public health. For example, in response to rabies incidents such as those that occurred in Lodi and Hackensack, staff distributes press releases and educational flyers. Hot lines are also staffed as necessary. In 2001, hot line questions related to West Nile virus, the World Trade Center attacks and the anthrax scare.
