Spring into Fitness

According to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, two-thirds of adults do not get the recommended amount of daily physical activity, which is 30 minutes most days. With the weather warming up and the days getting longer, spring is a perfect time to begin a program of physical activity.

Walking for health and fitness is ideal for most people because it doesn’t require any special skills, equipment or facilities. Walking helps control weight and prevent heart disease. Walking also aids in controlling cholesterol and diabetes, slows age-related bone loss and can help reduce depression.

The Bergen County Partnership for Community Health Increase Physical Activity & Improve Nutrition Goal Team has produced a brochure that explains the benefits of walking. Walking for Exercise and Pleasure contains tips on motivation, appropriate footwear and goal-setting. A log helps walkers track their progress.

Note: Men over 40 and women over 50 should consult a health care provider before starting an exercise program. If you have ever had heart trouble, high blood pressure, or suffer from chest pains, dizziness, fainting, or arthritis, check with your doctor before beginning your physical fitness program.
