According to a recent report, those aged 20-29 make up the third largest group of individuals diagnosed with AIDS in Bergen County. Many of these individuals were infected during their teen years.
To help curb the spread of HIV/AIDS in young people, prevention messages are key. A free copy of “How to Talk With Your Child About HIV/AIDS” is available to county residents to help parents discuss this important issue with their children.
The brochure offers simple advice to help parents understand what information is appropriate for their child’s age. For example, children in grades K-2 can be told to ask an adult for help when someone is hurt and bleeding. The brochure also explains how to talk with young children about HIV/AIDS. Some tips include:
- Find a quiet time and place to talk without interruption.
- Share your values. Your child wants to know what you think.
- Let your child know that they can talk to you with questions anytime.
