Established in 1978, Spring House is Bergen County’s only halfway house for women recovering from alcohol and drug addiction. The setting affords women who are homeless, unable to return home or in need of longer treatment an opportunity to enhance functioning on every level.
Spring House continues to assist women in their recovery by providing individual and group counseling, educational and vocational opportunities, a life skills curriculum, a monthly family education series, and linkages to other agencies and 12 Step support services in Bergen County.
Since the inception of the program, over 1,100 women have resided in the facility. They remain an average of six to eight months, depending on the needs of the individual. In 1999, there were 85 new admissions for an average occupancy rate of 74%. Residents received 70 hours of individual counseling, 672 hours of group work, 448 hours of 12 Step meetings, 65 hours of health education, 70 hours of addiction education, and 35 hours of family counseling/education.
In 1999, 76% of the women successfully completed the program and were honored at a graduation ceremony. The 64 graduates were encouraged to attend the aftercare program and join the very active alumnae association. A mentorship program was initiated to allow the women leaving Spring House to have an established connection within the recovery community.
Spring House continues to benefit from its active community-based board that sponsors an annual golf outing and other fundraising projects to supplement existing county services. In 1999, community volunteers donated 975 hours to Spring House.
