Working to Increase Smoke-free Restaurants
In 2001, the department’s LINCS Tobacco Program, in cooperation with the Bergen County Health Officers Tobacco Coalition, conducted a countywide survey of restaurants to determine the percentage of establishments that are smoke-free. A total of 1,801 surveys were produced in four languages and distributed to restaurants with seating in all 70 Bergen towns. After tabulation, a total of 1,563 surveys, or 87 percent, were returned. Results revealed that 52 percent of restaurants permit smoking and 48 percent are smoke-free.
Survey results were compiled in the Smoke-free Dining in Bergen County Directory. Survey responses point to a growing acceptance among restaurateurs that smoke-free dining makes for good business. Smoke-free environments protect patrons as well as employees, who are subject to long-term exposure.
Restaurant owners and residents are invited to assist in updating the Dining Directory. Updates can be e-mailed to aferrara@co.bergen.nj.us or entered in voice mail at 201-634-2744.
